SMF - Stop spammer seems to have stopped picking up spammers for me?!

Hi,

I have used the SMF stopspammer 2.2 plugin for about a month and was loving it!!

It picked up 158 spammers and isolated them before they could get on to the site.

However, about a week ago, the spammers came back and stop spammer seemed to have stopped working for me ...

If I go to "view all members" the spammer has the blue icon next to their details, but if I click the blue icon to check, then they have multiple reports against them?

Any ideas as to why they don't get the red icon anymore and why stop spammer (plugin) is no longer isolating these users automatically for me?

I am sure the error will be @ my end ... but I made no changes, other than deleting user accounts!

I upgraded to stopspammer 2.3 and it is working again ... not sure why 2.2 died for me!

Anyway, an easy fix in the end :-)

I'm glad you got it to work and wondered if you could assist me please?

I'm in the SMF Forum on another page right now and have also posted there.  Being new to all this I don't know which version to install or how to install.

Can you assist please?  I'd be so grateful as the idiot pammerss are making me want to cry (or pull out my hair).  Really, I think there is a special place in he.ll for them

Which version of SMF is your forum running?

Do you have any themes installed?

I use SMF 1.1.10 and the stop spammer 2.3 works VERY well ... no spammers have got through yet! (many attempts)

If you use a custom theme, you will need to make some minor manual changes to get the mod to work ...
example (if using a custom theme), you will need to copy the code (variables) from the default modifications dot english file to your themes modifications dot english file ... also you will need to copy the gifs too ...

Yes, I run the same.  I've downloaded the zip and have it on my desktop ...  Oh, and I have the Extreme theme which I modified.

Very easy!

Login to your forum as the admin account, then click on "Administration Center"

Then click on (Main) - packages

Then click on "download packages"

Then click on 'choose file' (under "Upload a Package") ... then click upload ... and follow the prompts.

I always make a copy of the forum files before applying any mod, just incase you want to back out ... this mod was problem free ... but a good idea anyway to be safe!

Apart from modifying your custom theme, that is all you need to do ...

Thank you for your help!  One more question though ... once installed, am I supposed to see an updated list under Ban List, or it is working more in the background?

The mod does not ban users ... it stops them from being able to register without approval from you.

If the users IP address, e-mail address or username is in the spam database, the user will not be able to register unless you click approve.

You will start to see the message 'there are xxx members awaiting approval' popping up ... you then click on that message and either approve or reject the user.

From my experience, if the IP address or e-mail match, reject them ... in some cases user names are not a good way of detecting a spammer ... so if the IP and e-mail are fine, I generally approve them.

Normal users can still register without your approval ...
