I P address
I am a little mystified. I was under the assumption that an IP address would identify a specifc computer, but my own comuter comes up with differing addresses ie.

David 78.146.117.134 Thu Oct 01, 2009 8:08 am Successful administration login
These are sufficient examples to illustrate my point.
If IP's do change from one day to the next, what is the point of me banning one?
Can someone explain what is happening?

In my opinion banning per IP helps stop the typical automated spamming scripts.
Here's my example.
Say you are a spammer and used IP 78.146.117.134 last Thursday.
You might have started your script to post spam to 300+ forum sites.
If the first site you attempted to spam had a great setup using blacklists, API's and Auto Spam Posting API's that first site might actually be your last site of the day spamming from IP 78.146.117.134.
When IP's are posted fresh that day forum admins should have their warning notices flooding their inboxes.
Be creative.
If SFS shows this line for your IP ip yes 2009-10-04 14:23:28 7
My script will see the date and time and the hit count for your IP.
If it's 1 or more on that same day you can expect to be redirected to my 403.6 page.
It's it's zero and you post spam to my forum then you can expect within a short amount of time my API will post to SFS your details.
It's not perfect, but if one forum admin reports your IP that could actually save time for hundreds of other forum admins that day.
Do something creative today, code something.

Re: I P address
I have seen DHCP (Dynamic Host Control Protocol) used on every ISP, Dial-up (almost always), DSL (common), and Cable (becoming more common as IP space and uplink bandwidth to the net from the Cable-Co are both way oversold.)
So everyone will jump around eventually. 'swhy my DNS service was chosen, around the idea that I am on a dynamic IP.

Re: I P address
It gives some explanation of why/how my IP changes, but continues to selfdefeat (in my opinion)computer identification.
The reasons quoted for still using it are our of my limited understanding but I will accept all that is said and continue to do so,
Thanks for your attentions.

If you would like to see a lot of different IPs used by one spammer, do a search of this database on Bennidoglabu
