Ditto on my email to him. As I said, he's a hard guy to reach since he took that job.

Re: SpambotSecurity

Being erroneously blocked from accessing SpambotSecurity is annoying, but given I'm a contributor to his project (several hundered dollars at least), being erroneously blocked AND not being able to contact Zap to fix it for me, is egregious. IMO Zap needs to 1) start being an active presence on his own site again, 2) assign server SSH access to at least one other of his trusted Administrators, or 3) sell ZB Block and his forum to someone with the skills and desire to continue and maintain the project.

I'm just a little more than peeved at him right now. I deserve better 'support' from him.

Re: SpambotSecurity

I like Pedigree's idea, and offer to migrate the site to here, but it might be simpler, easier to just give some one
that is trusted access, the lack of communication makes it difficult.  It only takes a couple of minuets to add a user, and give them the permissions needed to do routine maintenance, and be able to take care of things like this.

Re: SpambotSecurity

I presume you're still blocked?  He really does need to give another trusted user access to his site if he's going to be MIA, especially if there isn't a cron job to clear them periodically.

On my forum I have a cron job clear ZB Block bans every 24 hours.

While I liked Comcast's tendency to keep dynamic IPs nearly static when I used to have them (they rarely change short of changing the MAC address on the router), it can be annoying if you get IP blocked somewhere.  If you have your own router (not one provided by Comcast) you could change one digit in the MAC address to get a new IP... but if it's theirs, it's probably not possible to do this.

Now I'm in South Carolina and my internet is on Comporium, and rebooting my router/firewall often gives me a new IP.

Another option is to unplug the router for about a week, so the IP gets reassigned, but you probably don't want to be without internet for that long.  Maybe time to go on a vacation!  Travel somewhere and keep your modem/router unplugged for a while.  Even try unplugging it overnight, but with Comcast that may not be long enough.

We need better spam proofing technology - preferably the kind that electrocutes spammers with 50,000 volts 100 amps the moment they click "Post".

Re: SpambotSecurity

Yes, I'm still blocked. Totally sucks. sad

The impression one gets (that "I" get anyway) is that Zaphod has all but abandoned ZB Block.

I am curious, why do you need to log in ? Is there some other issue you need help with ? Question or what ever, besides not being able to login. Feel free to ask here, and maybe some one here can help with it, also I am willing to post it there for you, if it can not be addressed here.

Re: SpambotSecurity

Well, primarily, I don't like being denied access for something I didn't do. Yes, I can ask questions here, but damn it, I want to be able to access SpambotSecurity. I'm not one of the 'bad guys'. I support ZB Block. I've supported it financially. Zaphod needs to deal with this, and fix the issue. Period.

Re: SpambotSecurity

It irritates me to no end, when anyone; Zaphod not excluded; creates a resource, and a website to promote/support it, and then, based on a change in "life objectives", decides to foresake that endeavor, and leaving those who are using/depending on it to 'hang in the wind'.

You bet I'm being harsh. I have the right to be. He, on the otherhand, doesn't have the right to simply stop being available to a project that he developed, and that so many users are using and depend on.

Zap. Wake up and smell the pile of crap that you have (I really hope was unintentionally) created by your  extracked absence and silence!

Re: SpambotSecurity

Without knowing exactly what is going on, or what happend ,

He, on the otherhand, doesn't have the right to simply stop being available to a project that he developed, and that so many users are using and depend on.

Actually he certainly does have the right, he gave you the script he wrote, it is open source, and you can use it, just making
a $$$ donation does not mean you own the person.  Any way. I am going to close this thread, if it is going to turn into a
"bash zap" type thread, I respect the guy, and appreciate having the script he wrote, I can keep using it as long as I want and
modifying it to be up to date as needed.  You last post makes me wonder if  you are not being blocked from the site for other reasons as well.  But that is between you and Zap.
This may be harsh, but that is the reality.

Re: SpambotSecurity

I do understand that. When I said "he doesn't have the right', I was saying that as long as he 'maintains' his "support web-sight", he has an obligation to registered users to make support available; whether it be from him directly, or from designated staff. To make him the 'only one' who can fix this problem, and then make him self unavailable, is simply unacceptable.

Re: SpambotSecurity

People's interests do change over time, I've abandoned projects myself over the years.  At least he didn't shut down his website entirely, making the resource unavailable to all.  Others can easily take over the maintenance of ZB Block since it's open source.  I still use it even though there hasn't been a signature update in years... it still keeps out a lot of bad bots.

Discussing it here (and bashing Zap) isn't really helping anything... if it were me, I'd be tethering to my phone and posting over there that way, or finding a way to switch IPs.

If you think about it, it's just a website.  Just a forum.  The server could lose a hard drive tomorrow and it could vanish entirely.  The domain could expire if Zap doesn't renew it when the time comes.  But ZB Block would live on, since someone would surely take it over.  If Zap doesn't return to fix issues with his server, someone else will create a new site, and (hopefully) maintain it.

I don't have anywhere near the expertise of upgrading or updating said service he provides but if hosting becomes an issue I wouldn't mind also helping with hosting of said resource. Seems a pretty valuable resource that's used here.

Re: SpambotSecurity

Tethering, or otherwise logging on to SpambotSecurity 'with a different IP address' won't solve my standing issue. Sure, I could gain access again, but not from my home. Zaphod has to fix it, as no one else within his group of Administrators has access to the necessary files 'in the vault'.

I'm frustrated (can you tell?). Even if I were posting everything I've said here (in this thread) on SpambotSecurity, what good would it do, again, given that Zaphod isn't listening, and no one other than Zaphod can fix this. Catch-22.

It's okay of this thread gets closed. No one here can resolve the problem. Frustrated ranting over.

Re: SpambotSecurity

As a workaround, install the Opera browser and use that for Zap's site: if you turn on Turbo mode it will direct your traffic via their servers, and the SpambotSecurity site will not block it.

Re: SpambotSecurity

I'll give that a try. I can install Opera on my Linux laptop and on my iMac as well. Opera isn't however, available for iOS; my iPad; and I use my iPad ALOT.

I'll post back as to the results.

Re: SpambotSecurity

There's an Opera VPN app for iPad.  I presume it routes traffic through the same servers as the Opera browser.  Or if you already have another VPN, you can connect your iPad to that from within settings.

Re: SpambotSecurity

Opera Mini is there on iPad, apparently, though opinion of it seems to be divided. It doesn't do everything, but there's probably enough there for talking to a forum.
Not sure if that's what kpatz is referring to?

Re: SpambotSecurity

Just (re)-installed Opera on my iMac. Still getting the 503 page with it in 'normal' mode. Switching to VPN mode allows me to connect to SpambotSecurity without any issues.

I read the comments about Opera Mini on the App Store. Mostly negative. I'll just use Opera in VPN mode from my iMac. It's a workable solution until Zaphod fixes me from his end.

Re: SpambotSecurity

Just as a quick heads up regarding the Spambot Security forums: They've been essentially defunct and unavailable since the past few days, likely due to inadequate disc space on Zap's server, based on the error messages displayed when attempting to access the Spambot Security forums or website.

In case Zap doesn't get around to sorting it out, one of the Spambot Security members, JamesC, has set up an alternative support endpoint for ZB Block, available here: http://zb-block.net/zbf/

At least until Zap gets around to sorting out the problems at Spambot Security, I'd recommend directing ZB Block support inquiries to the forums set up by JamesC.

phpMussel file upload protection (v1.2.0, 2018.01.20).
CIDRAM IP blocker (v1.4.0, 2018.01.20).
SFS Mass IP Checker (v0.1.3, 2016.09.10).
IPv4+IPv6 IP/CIDR Aggregator (v1.1.0, 2017.10.29).

Thanks for the info.

@Snowhog - Zap doesn't owe you, or any of us who have donated, anything. He put a lot of work into ZB Block and made it available to all for free. Donations are a way of thanking him, they do not buy you a lifetime of tech support.
