I'd love to add to the list out but I don't have any ip addresses

I just found this site yesterday and have already noticed that the amount of spammers trying to register on my site is much lower than in past days. (Yay, ) I'd love to help and provide all the people that have tried to join to just be spammers, but I don't have any of their ip addresses. I only have the username that they used on my site and the email address they used to join my site.

Depending on your board, you can probably get a hack or patch to add that info )

Personally IMHO, the IP field should not be mandatory as most spammers don't use the same IP

Personally IMHO, the IP field should not be mandatory as most spammers don't use the same IP

I find that many spammers (I get about 20 registrations a day) use a similar block of IPs, e.g. x.x.x.30 - x.x.x.76 so perhaps you're better off just blocking that range of IPs if you can.
What I have noticed though is one spammer will register with the IP x.x.x.37 and activate their account with x.x.x.38 and then login and post spam with x.x.x.39 and I find this a regularly occurring pattern.

IP data is still useful to have in the list, after all spammers have to come from somewhere.

I'm curious what you're using that doesn't show you what the IPs are, at the very least you should be able to get this from your web server logs.

We have a free forum on www.mfbb.net, that doesn't record I.P. when a new account request is submitted.  I'm noticing one strange consistency among all of the spammers that use email addresses that are listed here. Regardless of the IP listed here, they always register with the first language option on the pull down list (Chinese) even though the default is English.  The same thing happens with the board style option.  The spam account is always set to the first option on the list, even though the default is Firefox. I suspect they are using an automated system to find weak board servers they can hack.

Sounds like the scripts aren't sophisticated enough to deal with form elements presented that it isn't programmed to fill in. I bet you could modify the registration page to say "Are you a spammer?" and include "yes" and "no" in a dropdown, with "yes" being the default option, and catch them that way...
