Newbie and Spammers

Ok, I am a complete newbie not only to this site but to running my own site.
It was actually built by a friend as I dont have a clue where to start when it comes to building a site, but I am managing to run it fine.  However, I keep getting spam trying to join the site so they can put up filthy links, or just rubbish etc. and when I check them on this site there is usually hundreds of spam reports against their username or ip etc.  How do I stop these?
I did download a file called spam checkers but when I tried to upload it to my site, it said

"The package you tried to upload either is not a valid package or has become corrupted."

Can anyone help me?  I need a file that I can upload into my packages in my Admin area that will stop these spammers being able to join the site or leave posts.

Many thanks and sorry if you think I sound nice and thick, but bare with me I'm just learning.

Dee

That's an SMF forum message from the Package Manager.
