blocking spammer domains with phpBB
Hi! I'm an admin for a website that uses phpBB, and I was wondering how I go about blocking some of the popular spammer domains from registering.

You can see http://www.stopforumspam.com/forum/t328 … pam-phpBB2 and http://www.stopforumspam.com/forum/t280 … pforumspam
I use it and I'm very pleased.

Re: blocking spammer domains with phpBB
If you just want to stop the automated 'bots, here's a reCAPTCHA mod for phpBB:

Dunno anything about it, since I only admin SMF and IPB forums. The messages in the support thread look positive, though.
On one forum that I installed reCAPTCHA on, the automated registrations stopped totally. On the other forum (using a standard captcha) we're still getting 2 to 3 spammers per day, even though I ban their IP blocks every time I find one coming off of a server or from a country that doesn't respond to ABUSE e-mails. I have a hideously long list of IP CIDRs that I included in my .htaccess file to keep hackers and spammers OFF of the forums.
I can't just toss my whole list out here though, 'cos there's some OTHER people in it as well. One evening I noticed some hits on one of our ADULT ONLY forums that were coming from the US Supreme Court. I immediately denied their netblock. The last thing I want to do is give politicians a reason for restricting my rights even further, and the USA is *not* above doing witch hunts when they get a bug up their kazoo.

All CAPTCHAs are junk already. I only use Inverted visual confirmation check when a visitor requests to send a new password.
This is true spam killer - http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopi … 6&t=430710
I have installed it on 10 Nov 2008. See my post in thread - last in line.

I'd like to know what you mean by that.
EVERY forum owner that I've talked to that's switched to reCAPTCHA has utterly halted these automated registrations. It won't stop manual spammer registrations, but then again neither will your inverted whatever. Manual spammer registrations will NEVER hit the levels that these 'bot programs can.
If Xrumer has already cracked reCAPTCHA, then the rest of the world needs to know, like REALLY SOON.
We were getting on average between 2 to 5 'bot registrations per day until we implemented reCAPTCHA. Since then, zero. Nada. Nothing.
Tell me again that all captchas are junk, si vous plait?

For those wanting to see how Xrumer works and it's CAPTCHA abilities:
http://agha.st/2008/10/xrumer-50a---goo … racked.php
That's a legit site btw, not a baddie.
