Using censored words on spam in phpbb2

My BookWise forum gets a relatively small (so far) but steady stream of porn spam.

One thing I have done is put every spammy word I could think of into the word censor and replace each spam word with "spam".  That turns most of their spam posts into gibberish like this:  "spam spam teen spam!  amateur spam spam spam!  spam video spam spam spam!

It makes the posts pretty funny to read, sort of like the old Monty Python sketch that gave spam it's name!   big_smile

One problem with this is that some of the words in the word censor are used legitimately in real posts by my users.  For example, one post about the works of Norman Mailer now makes reference to "The spam and the dead"!!  Oh well, it's a small price to pay...

My main concern at this point is that I can't find a way to block the pictures they insert using bbcode.  I really do NOT want to turn of the bbcode!  I have tried putting "IMG" and variations of it into the word censor but it has no effect.  Does anyone know how to block the insertion of images without turning bbcode off?

Thanks so much!

Have a blessed day!

Re: Using censored words on spam in phpbb2

I just read this post after replying to your other request regarding disabling the URL code.  Unfortunately, I only know how to turn all of the BBCodes off.

On my site, I had the same problem with inappropriate images being posted.

When the Word Censor list includes the BBCodes, unfortunately, the PHP engine processes the original text in the entry prior to word translation.  This results in the images being displayed in the post even though you may have translated IMG to 'spam' or something else.

You may want to try temporarily turning off all BBCodes and letting the individuals interested in using the IMG keyword eventually learn that your website is no place for them.  After you notice these types of posts have diminished, you could reactivate the feature.

I noticed that each user account can have the HTML or BBCode options set individually.  Although the user may change these options, you could turn off these options until a user is trusted.  This is more work for the account administrator, so I really don't like it.  I would like to move these options to selectable only by an administrator.  If this is possible, then you could allow the BBCodes for trusted users after they post quality content.

I apologize that I don't have a solution that allows you select a subset of BBCodes for your site.   Hopefully someone has tackled this and solved it already.  If I come across any material, I'll let you know!

Does anyone know if there is a mod for phpbb 2.0.22 or newer that censurs the text first of all before checking for bb code's etc?

Just a suggestion.

Overwrite with 'and' and 'or' mixed. Mixed case is good: aND AnD.

That way, it doesn't affect google rankings for anti-spam sites.

Also, it doesn't make your forum look like a keyword stuffer, which would sooner or later drop you down in the ratings.

hth.
