Setting up a scarecrow for spammers
I've been trying this for awhile, and it *seems* to have a positive effect, though I haven't really anaylyzed the spam rates. I'd be interested in knowing if anyone else has tried it:
My forum software lists who is online, and flags admins and mods by displaying their name in different colors. So during most of the day, even when I'm at work and not doing anything in my forum, I just keep myself signed in. I can just sign in, minimize my forum window and just open and refresh it every once in a while to keep myself logged in. I think that some spambots check to see if admins and mods are online, knowing that if they are, any signups and posts are liable to be deleted immediately, ... so they try to come back later when the admins are gone.
At any rate, I seem to get less spam signups when I do this.

Re: Setting up a scarecrow for spammers
HI,
I work from home, and like you I have my boards open in the background and can check out postings/signups almost as soon as made .. but being visible as Admin - that doesnt stop spam signups. I still get them regardless. But I do notice certain times of day are more active for spammers than others regardless of whether I am on the board or not.
