Welcome to our Forums

I hope this will prove to be a good resource to forum administrators looking to stop spambots from registering.

Great site. Very interesting to see the run down by location. Makes me want to turn my forum into a spam trap!

Re: Welcome to our Forums

I have used the resources of this site quite a bit lately as another tool to identify bots that manage to get past my filters, register and never post anything....as opposed to lurkers which I don't mind.....smile
Thanks

Re: Welcome to our Forums

Thank you for the great IPs list. It has significantly cut down the spam (and spam registrators) on my bulletin board. I update my IP "banned" list daily from your site.  Occasionally, some spammer posts a message on my board, but mostly always they only register. Why do they do this? What is their purpose.... is it just to show they can do so?

I use YaBB for my board, so I do not think I can add APIs, or I would like to contribute to your list.

Many thanks,
  Carolyn

My impression is that most spam campaigns are two fold, that begins with a registration phase and then the payload delivery, when the messages are actually posted. Either that, or the bots are made to register simply to get listed in userlists that include links to their target website, in order to gain a PR boost. Or, something has gone wrong and the bot never receives its instruction to post.

The add form allows you to add spammers to the list regardless of what forum software you use. I hope one day to write some plugins for the more popular software packages that will help automate the process.

Re: Welcome to our Forums

Many thanks for the domain list, I've added it to my banned email addresses... so I'm hoping that'll cut back on the amount of bots that I get.

I have admin validation set for new registrations which has helped stop any spam but I'm hoping the banned email addresses will reduce the amount of bots that try and get past.

Re: Welcome to our Forums

I really love this project, it's been very helpful in my daily combat against spambots. I first stumbled across this site when googling the suspicious e-mail addresses to identify them as bots or not. I've since become dependent upon your resources and even started contributing to the database. Thanks for doing such good work!

One too many spam bots finally pushed me over the edge! Time to get even. smile

Re: Welcome to our Forums

Russ,
Yes, I will use your "add" form if I can identify a new spam/bot IP not already on your list. Unfortunately YaBB only provides to me the IPs of persons/bots who actually post a message on the Board, --which no spammer/bot has done since I have banned all the IPs on your list.  However YaBB does give me a list of the IPs that attempted to access my Board which were rejected because they are on my "Banned IP List" (=your list).  There were over 20 rejected IPs just for one day-- yesterday.  So I really appreciate your list. Thank you so much!
Carolyn

Hi!

I never used to get spammers, until recently.
It looks like your database will be a useful thing. Thanks!

Re: Welcome to our Forums

Hi all, TeMerc here and figured I'd drop a hello. You can Google me if you like and find out more about me. Been around a bit. big_smile

This is a great idea, and I'd like to say thanks for setting this up. AFAIC we can't have enough forums to list the scum as they set up new accounts\names\email domains.

To that end, I'd like to share with you another person who has had enough and set up a similar forum\site:
http://www.fspamlist.com/index.php

I hope this link  is taken as it's intent, to inform others of another source and not as an attempt to 'spam' or promote that site.

I'm an admin at several sites and hate the spam problem and even have my own 'back room' for listing the spammers I catch at my place. I now have another source for these vermin, thanks.

Re: Welcome to our Forums

Thanks for this site which I found accidentally by doing a search on a name I suspected of spamming - and you had already identified it. I shall be searching here first from now on.

Re: Welcome to our Forums

I am very greatful for finding this site. I don't know what url brought me here, but so glad to have this as a resource. I am a super moderator on a couple music forums and have been quite successful in identifying suspected forum spammers, and subsequently banning those spammers before they had a chance to even complete their forum registrations ... lol!  Very cool for a moderator - very uncool for the spammer - but I believe that with concerted efforts like this one, we will be able to keep those spamming fools at an arm's distance sooner.

Re: Welcome to our Forums

Thanks for making this site!

I found this place accidentally as well -- checking the legitimacy of a domain.  Unfortunately(for the purposes of this site, anyway), most of the spammers on my board just do the non-confirmed registration thing, so I don't have IPs for them.

Re: Welcome to our Forums

Thanks for your efforts.
Our forum has been getting hit the past few days with the E mail address of amnevsepoh.info   I must be getting about 10 registration applications a day from this address.  I try to enter the address in the banned e mail area but for whatever reason it does not seem to enter.  Even though I get the updated message.

I must tell you that I am not computer savy.  Our website was designed by professionals and made semi idiot proof.  We do have a forum and I have been sort of relegated to keeping it up to snuff.
Any suggestions on how to stop these bogus registrations ?

I have been simply deleting them without activating their registrations.  But its getting to be a pain in the you know what.

Thanks again.

Re: Welcome to our Forums

Bookmarked your site as soon as I ended up here from a google search of a email addy.  Love the site!  We get an average of 4 to 5 registrations a day that don't follow through and activate their account.  I've been assuming these are spammers since they don't reply to emails and never follow through with activation.

Thanks for the list.  I'll be adding the list to my banned list on my forums.

Re: Welcome to our Forums

Glad to see this site.  I'm in the process of setting up a site with forum and even though it's still a work in progress I'm getting spammers. At first it was a game trying to catch them and get their information to block, but soon became an annoyance.

Re: Welcome to our Forums

Thanks so much for your info!  I'm a new website host trying to make inexpensive sites for some non-profits in my area.  I thought that having a forum for a Clean and Sober living support group would be helpful, but we got spammed with TONS of porn and now all kinds of other junk!  Do I have a prayer of running a clean forum that will let the public post to it?  I suppose using a Capthcha image is the minimum of security I should be using, but I had hoped to make it easy for people to contact us with items to donate.  Which post should I go to to find the basics on how to block using your domains lists?
I'd appreciate any tips!  Susan

Re: Welcome to our Forums

This is a great site!  We've recently set up our own forum and it's invaluable to know who's a spammer and who's not - although any weird stuff remains unvalidated anyway!

Re: Welcome to our Forums

Thanks for the great resource! I was having some trouble distinguishing between spammer IPs and regular users, so when I search for a suspect IP and see that they've been reported by a few other people, I know I can safely ban the IP. I'll be adding IPs to the database as I catch them.

Re: Welcome to our Forums

Nice site.  I have been watching it for a while and finally integrated it into my smf forum. Works great.  Should start seeing submissions from our site within a couple hours.  Sure has been helpful to stop the spam.  Thanks for the resource!

Re: Welcome to our Forums

And a big thank you for the nice lists. I wandered in here on a search for info on a couple of IPs I got from my site's log after noting an unusual number of hits.

I have a forum, and maintain a couple of others, but haven't had much trouble with forum spam since I use SMF and keep it updated. It's not very big, either, not so tempting. When I had an older version installed on the side just to demo some skins, it got spammed. I've seen a few go down when they weren't upgraded, it's sad.

Today's alarm was different. Some kind of file hotlinking, I think -- but the IPs are on the spam list. Anyway, it started a couple of days ago but it's stopped now, I edited my .htaccess.

I notice there is some alarm about the AVG toolbar. I share the feeling that it is not really a good thing. It slows down the browser as well. I think that fast connections are causing an overall degradation of Internet quality ("Bloat Is Better") and encouraging horrible bandwidth waste. But it only hurts those who can't fight it.

Ehh...'scuze my rambling.

Re: Welcome to our Forums

Finally, a site that might be able to thin out the amount of spammers on my forum so I can get some time to myself!

My name is Richie owner of the Spanish Real Estate Forum - I didn't really notice how many spam registrations the forum was getting when I first set up the forum last year. I clicked on a couple of months later when posts meant nothing and too many one liners started to appear - which wasn't much compared to now.

I have banned god knows how many spam sign ups and deleted them at the end of the week, wish I had found this site before because I have deleted well over 1,500 in the space of a year and a half.

When I am back to work on monday, I will be straight back to use this great list of IP addresses, emails and users to finally cut back on the amount of time I have wasted over this space of time.

Will become a resident here if you don't mind big_smile

Regards

Richie
