I get lots of spam registrations to the point that I had to change things so that once someone registers they can't post until I activate the account. Prior to doing that, I research their email name and IP and the username they've chosen. If something doesn't look right, I don't activate it. It's a lot of extra work for me though. I really apprecate your site here and would be happy to give you the info on the spammers that register on my site, if you want it. Many of them you already have listed, although they sometimes use a different username on my site or something like that. Anyway, if you want more contributions, please let me know how to go about sending you the info and I'll be glad to do it. Anything to put a stop to this!

Hello Cindy and welcome!
Here is the link to get an api key so you can submit:
http://www.stopforumspam.com/signup
Then when you want to submit an entry manually, just go here:
http://www.stopforumspam.com/add
and enter the data. If you stay logged in, your api key will stay filled in.
Enjoy

Thanks! We just upgraded to a new board so at the moment I'm very busy getting everything straightened out and running smoothly. I'll see what I can submit for you as soon as I get things on my site squared away.

Tried to add a spammer, but since I don't have an email address for it, it wouldn't let me. It's already in the database 194 times, so it probably doesn't matter.
FYI, what I have:
username: zreaijrtn
IP: 193.53.87.111
The post itself was complete gobbledygook.

It's been amazing, but ever since we installed our new board we haven't had a single spammer! We used to get at least 3 a day! Maybe they all went on vacation or something lol So I'm just enjoying the vacation for the moment!

I shouldn't have said anything lol, we just got one and I added it.
The email I got to sign up for an API key, said we could add our forum to the list of contributors, but I didn't see any way to to that.. can you explain? Maybe I just haven't had enough coffee yet this morning...

Is there a way to add when you don't have all the information, since the /add page says all fields are required? I often catch spammers in the act and block them before they can post, which means all I have is their IP address. Sometimes one of my players will notify me of having deleted a spam post and I'll go track down the IP in the access log. The end result is I don't have a username or email address, just their license plate number as it were.
For example, 218.10.111.106 spammed my forum today (something in Spanish or Italian, according to the player who deleted the post). It's not in the database and I have no way to add it.

I have had private discussion about this with Russ. Bottom line is that he doesn't want submissions without all of the fields. I think that's extremely unfortunate, as even though I don't have an IP address until someone tries to actually post, I can positively identify as many as 20 spam accounts a day long before they ever unleash the bots and begin the massive spam postings. And repeated checks on this site show me that in general I identify and block the spammers on the site that I moderate several hours before they show up in the list of spammers here.
I've contributed about 50 spammers, these are the ones that got as far as hitting the spam filters (or even a few who posted) in the last few months. If we could make submissions with empty fields I would have been able to submit about 1200 more, and get them into the database quickly enough to be able to provide some level of help for others.
It also, of course, means that sites that don't require an e-mail address may not be able to submit spammers even after they spam and they have one or more IP addresses for them.
One could, of course, lie and fill in the empty field with something that would be accepted. Some one else suggested in public posts that I do exactly that. But it's Russ's site and he sets the policy and I think that the only proper thing to do is for people to communicate with him and suggest that he rethink the policy, not corrupt the data by circumventing it.
Of course, my opinion may be of very low value. I'm appalled by the lack of some simple moderation on this site and have stopped submitting any new spammers. If things get cleaned up I'll start again. If things clean up and the submission policy changes I may even be able to provide a lot of user/e-mail pairs while they are still signing up on other sites. But for now I'm not a contributor.

Mine goes the other way - I see lots of spammers sign up which means I have both their email and username, but I don't have their IP address (for whatever reason, it doesn't show up obviously in the control panel of the board that I moderate.)
And hello, 1st post! I'm hoping this board will help me distinguish the spammers in the signups.

I don't know what software you are using but it should be able to add a script that pulls the IP of each registration. If you are using something PHP based I can probably help. I'm using vbulletin on both of my sites and worth every penny as far as I'm concerned but not everyone has the wants to spend x # of dollars a year to keep the license up to date to get the upgrades.

thanks! might take you up on your help. I'd have to check into it a bit further, believe it's v-bulletin based (but... as I'm about to take off on vacation, it's not really my top priority right now.

Hi Cindy,
You can add your site to the list of contributors by visiting the API Keys link near the top of the forum. If you tick the box marked "Public" next to the site(s) you want listed and hit "Update", you'll appear as a contributor.
Hope this helps. ![]()

If your board does not require a username and an email address to register, you should get a better one. There are dozens of boards available from totally free to very expensive, and I have yet to see one worth installing that doesn't require a username and an email address to register for a membership. (Not to mention I don't see how you could post on a board without at least having a username...) Some may not collect and or display IP addresses, but there again, find one that does.
