Why do the spammers use such stupid usernames?
Why do they use idiotic usernames like WewEnvenO or Pybeagogrooky (two taken from registrations today)? Not to mention the bleeding obvious "delete me, I'm a spammer" usernames like "MileyCyrusNude" and "WOWGold" etc. Not that I'm saying there aren't some idiotic genuine usernames, but those are generally at least pronounceable, rather than just obvious randaomly generated garbage.
Wouldn't they buy themselves more time with a name like John4728, or something else that just sounds like an unimaginative user, rather than an obvious spambot that most admins will kill without a second thought? Or are the wacky random letters names so they can track themselves, since those will usually be unique?

Re: Why do the spammers use such stupid usernames?
The unpronounceable names are generated by spambots. That's the best they can do with random letter generators. I have actually noticed a few smarter spammers (or spam programs) that use names like "John4728."
As for the ones with names like "Ima Spammer" I don't know. Might be that the human running the spam program has gotten bored with his "job" and is having a little "fun."

I had one Git called (as best i remember)
Dianakilla
I screwed his Ass to vB banning.
Unfortuanately, it was a long time ago, before i registerd @SFS.
So never added the plonka to DB.... Ho-Hum
As for the prats with stupid (long) names, or them that spam in their
usernames.. EG: usemypharmacyAtxxxxx
Go into your "User profile options", and limit the Usertitle max characters
to a reasonable number. (Mine is set at 12)
ALSO ... Use the Option to censor certain words which can be used in Usertitle.
Here's a few.....
porn viag sell pharm sex [Censored because I cant articulate my thoughts] buy blog online page conv mega mail serv vid
xxx cheap hol busin dick cock shag md doc wild tit

Hmmm, some of those would make excellent new user-agent spam catches. Thanks for the ideas.

Re: Why do the spammers use such stupid usernames?
A lot of times I'll catch a spammer because they register using a name, or email address, that has "phone" or "mobile" in it.
I thought of putting those words in the vBulletin forbidden list, but then I wouldn't be able to collect data to submit to SFS. I may add it to my autoban function, which dumps spammers direct into the spammers usergroup so they can't post but I can still get their info to submit here.
Spam happens when greed meets stupidity.

Re: Why do the spammers use such stupid usernames?
We tried banning words (not spammers) on the forums as well, till people started complaining the could not talk about Shitlhave Dam, one of the dams in Kruger.
So we stopped that (whitelisted), but if I see usernames sometimes... Totally good members, knowledgable and all, but the names they choose?...
Banning tit... is that *tit*? That would have nasty effects with say someone called Titahena (which is a normal name...).

Re: Why do the spammers use such stupid usernames?
But words like fisting, and erebli are always good bans.
But I will be using those words to blast http_referers. Nothing like someone trying to drag where they've been into your possibly public serverlogs.

Re: Why do the spammers use such stupid usernames?
vBulletin
Banning Short/Parts of words will not affect existing members.
Using parts of words will prevent future users from registering with
spam in their usernames. It is purely in the hands of the forum
Security Administrator (or other), to use the banning options to their
full advantage.
Discretion MUST be used in ACP @"User profile options", (Usertitles).
And YES !! It will always affect a good guy, but they must choose a
different Username.... Better that !! Than spam .. lol
EG:
Banning a word like "via", will prevent registrations (including).
via
viagra
viaduct
trivia
trivial
vial
ETC:
Take a look thru the list of banned Usernames @SFS. You may get some
good ideas for partial names to add to your banning list....
BTW.....
I can only speak for vB banning. I have naver worked in Security areas
for any other forum format... (PunBB) etc
Enjoy rest of the week ..

Re: Why do the spammers use such stupid usernames?
For me it's a great boon that forum spammers ae so stupid. We don't have such a large volume of signups only four or five a day so I get to look at each one and I've gotten pretty good at seeing one at 20 paces.
We don't get lot of spambot behaviour but we have an increasing number of those people who write a post that kids fits but has a link to a web site they are advertising. What I find interesting is that more and more of them are for regular sites and not porn or viagra or some scam site. Recently I have had a links legit sites to a site selling sweets, or makeup and one for cigars. I am thinking of contacting the web site owners and asking for a fee. : )

Re: Why do the spammers use such stupid usernames?
A good "too stupid to live" spammer today. Uses a .ru email address. Sig link to a .ru domain website. Most profile fields completed in Russian. Whois search shows they're from the Ukraine.
Somehow that "Location: United Kingdom" they put in their profile isn't fooling me...

Re: Why do the spammers use such stupid usernames?
this isn't a username, but I think we can file it under the "stupid" category anyway .
I noticed that this moron was caught by my anti-spam MOD, but it didn't get reported here,
and here's why :
Username: AFSifedinkinindm
IP: 194.8.75.145
E-mail: gennick[fdthsrtvv]@2009ok1.biz
yup, that's his e-mail address,
I think he's gonna have a really hard time registering on forums with an invalid e-mail address .

Re: Why do the spammers use such stupid usernames?
I have one very overzealous mod who would have banned a lot of usernames on this site. But I do insist that they go through me first.
What I am actually saying is what realy is a stupid name
